As the global economy shifts from linear to circular, the question of measurement becomes paramount. James Woodcock of International Synergies Ltd. recently represented the RISERS project in an expert-led webinar focused on the role of standardisation in the circular transition.
The event was hosted by the prominent Norwegian network for research, development, and innovation within the waste and circular economy sectors.
From Waste to Resource
The core of the presentation centered on the RISERS project’s latest findings, detailed in the factsheet: “From Waste to Resource – Reforming End-of-Waste Criteria through Standards.” James Woodcock outlined a transformative proposal: replacing traditional End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria with harmonised standards. This shift aims to reduce regulatory ambiguity and create a more fluid market for secondary raw materials. By moving toward harmonised standards, the industry can ensure that materials “exit” the waste regime with high-quality, verifiable data
behind them, making them more attractive for industrial reuse.
Why Standardisation Matters
The webinar addressed a fundamental hurdle in the green transition: without harmonised data, assessing goal achievement in recycling remains a challenge. By establishing clear, standardised frameworks, the RISERS project provides a roadmap for industries and regulators to speak the same language, ensuring that circularity is a measurable, transparent reality rather than just a strategic goal.
