The Horizon Europe project RISERS and the Horizon 2020 project CORALIS (Creation Of value chain Relations through novel Approaches facilitating Long-term Industrial Symbiosis) have joined forces to promote industrial symbiosis (IS) across Europe.
CORALIS focuses on implementing IS solutions in real-world settings, creating value chains through the exchange of materials, energy, and by-products among industries. By establishing and running three successful demonstrators in industrial parks, CORALIS has demonstrated how IS can enhance resource efficiency, reduce emissions, and generate economic value. These pilots have also provided valuable insights into the regulatory and standardisation factors that influence the replication of IS solutions, with a specific focus on energy management, energy efficiency, and by-products.
This experience is particularly relevant to RISERS, which is developing a roadmap for IS standardisation. CORALIS’s insights, such as identifying barriers and gaps that can be addressed through standardisation, contribute directly to RISERS’s goals. Additionally, CORALIS offers lessons in stakeholder engagement, emphasising the roles and responsibilities of diverse actors—from national policymakers to local authorities, industries, and R&D organisations—in facilitating IS.
These topics were explored during a joint RISERS-CORALIS online workshop on November 20th, fostering dialogue on how to align efforts and share best practices. Both projects are optimistic about continuing this collaboration and sharing experiences to accelerate the adoption of industrial symbiosis. For sure this is not our last meeting.
Many thanks to Simona Wurster, Roberta Montesano, Luca MARAFIOTI, Lieven Demolder and Andrea Motola for their presentations. And thanks for the productive discussion to the consortium members of the CORALIS and the RISERS projects.
