RISERS > Plenary of the Industrial Symbiosis Standardisation Roadmap Working Groups

Plenary of the Industrial Symbiosis Standardisation Roadmap Working Groups

Date: Wednesday, 12 November 2025
Time: 09:30–16:30 CET

Hybrid event

Venue : Rue Guimard 7 (4th floor), EIT House, Brussels

Context

The RISERS roadmap on industrial symbiosis standardisation is being developed as a strategic reference for European and national standardisation bodies, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and R&I actors. It supports the objectives of the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the EU Standardisation Strategy, while contributing to ongoing policy files such as the revision of the Waste Framework Directive, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and the upcoming European Innovation Act. By identifying standardisation needs in ten priority areas—from end-of-waste criteria and digital traceability to sector-specific value chains such as batteries, steel, and textiles—the roadmap aims to enable the broader uptake of industrial symbiosis across Europe.

It builds on extensive stakeholder engagement, including the mapping of over 600 industrial symbiosis cases, targeted consultations with CEN and CENELEC Technical Committees, and a first round of Working Group meetings held throughout spring 2025. The November plenary is a key milestone to validate preliminary recommendations, consolidate cross-cutting findings, and define the next phase of roadmap development. It will ensure that the final roadmap is actionable, inclusive, and aligned with Europe’s policy ambitions for circularity, innovation, and sustainable industrial transformation.

Objectives

Validate and consolidate the preliminary recommendations developed by the Industrial Symbiosis Standardisation Working Groups and present the next steps towards the development of the IS Standardisation Roadmap. This includes:

  • Reviewing and refining the current outputs from the WGs to ensure alignment, coherence, and relevance.
  • Outlining the activities planned for 2026, with a focus on the consultation phase and the finalisation process of the roadmap.
  • Engaging stakeholders in a discussion on priorities, gaps, and opportunities to ensure the roadmap is actionable, inclusive, and widely supported.
